Plumas County Sheriff’s Office Thwarts Publishers Clearing House Scam, Issues Warning to the Community

The Plumas County Sheriff’s Office acted swiftly to prevent a Publishers Clearing House scam following a concerned citizen’s report. An impersonator claiming to represent Publishers Clearing House had deceived the victim’s husband by promising a car prize. Fortunately, deputies intervened, preventing a potentially financially catastrophic situation. They found the husband outside Safeway, about to mail a large cash withdrawal to the scammer, and convinced him to return the money to his account.

Now, the Sheriff’s Office is seizing this opportunity to educate the community on safeguarding themselves from scams.
They shared several essential tips to prevent falling victim to fraudulent activities, including never sending cash or gift cards to unknown callers, refusing to pay if someone claims you have a warrant, and immediately reporting such incidents to local law enforcement.

Furthermore, the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office emphasized that Publishers Clearing House would never request money to claim prizes and urged individuals to disregard any advice from scammers urging them not to contact their local police.

The Sheriff’s Office has encouraged the public to share this information widely to raise awareness and protect loved ones from falling victim to fraud.
