Prepare for a slowdown-emergency roadway repairs begin today over Fredonyer Summit due to earthquake damage. Recent quakes near Lake Almanor have caused uneven surfaces along the stretch of the highway just east of Coppervale on SR36.
Caltrans District 2 and contractors say it will cost 375,000 dollars to repair the pavement deformations caused by the rumbles that began in early May at magnitudes over 5.0 on the Richter scale. Smaller quakes have continued to shake the area over the last several weeks but at much smaller, undetected magnitudes. When the initial shock happened, Caltrans crews were sent to the numerous bridges throughout their territory to inspect for damage, yet reported the crossings remained sound and safe for travel.
During this work, there will be one-way traffic controls with up to 10-minute delays this week through Friday during daytime hours.
You can also plan on extended travel times in Plumas County along Highway 89 as Caltrans resumes slide repairs on SR89. For $1.22 million, Hat Creek and Caltrans will further address the slide activity near Canyon Dam and about half of a mile of the Wolf Creek Underpass. Operations include slope excavation and grading, debris removal, and placement of rock slope protection and erosion control.
Work will begin Wednesday through the area. You can plan for 24/7 traffic control with up to 15-minute delays. Caltrans says the project is anticipated to be completed by early October.
