Heavy snow has brought the Plumas National Forest many challenges in opening recreation sites for summer, some expected to not open until July. You may already be able to make reservations for Outdoors in Plumas-managed campground sites at Lake Davis, Frenchman Lake, Lakes Basin, and Antelope Lake. However, the opening of these sites and recreation facilities across the Forest may be delayed due to snowpack and access issues, affecting early-season reservations.
Large amounts of snow in various areas, from the Lakes Basin Recreation Area to Little Grass Valley Reservoir, are restricting access to the sites and the ability to complete work for the season.
The Forest Service says maintenance tasks must be completed for public health and safety before sites can open, including checking for hazard trees, completing damage assessments, making repairs, turning on and testing water systems, and other necessary tasks.
Recreation employees are monitoring conditions and searching for opportunities to open sites. However, they must also clear roads and culverts before beginning work. Melting snowpack and runoff are affecting culverts and roads.
Despite the challenges, the Beckwourth Ranger District recreation staff anticipate Frenchman Lake sites may be open by late May.
For those hoping to make reservations for Mill Creek and Sundew campgrounds near Bucks Lake, the Forest is still transitioning management of the sites to PG&E so reservations may be delayed.
