The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has issued subpoenas to California’s government, seeking documentation related to the disbursement of federal funds to illegal immigrants. The subpoenas were filed by the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) office in Los Angeles and specifically target the Cash Assistance Program for Immigrants (CAPI).
CAPI is designed to provide financial assistance to aged, blind, and disabled non-citizens who do not qualify for federal Supplemental Security Income. However, the White House alleges that the program also benefits illegal immigrants who are ineligible for social security benefits.
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem criticized California lawmakers, claiming they prioritize illegal immigrants over citizens by allowing access to cash benefits. She emphasized that the Trump Administration is focused on identifying and addressing any misuse of public benefits by those in the country illegally, stating, “If you are an illegal immigrant, you should leave now. The gravy train is over.” The current subpoenas are limited to Los Angeles County but are seen as a starting point for broader investigations.
