California’s Year of the Snake: Wildlife Sting Operation Uncovers Illegal Trafficking Network

SHARE NOW
This year we celebrate the Year of the Snake, an important creature in California’s diverse ecosystem. Snakes play a crucial role as both predator and prey, helping to maintain a balanced environment.
Recently, wildlife officers in Northern California concluded a significant sting operation combating illegal wildlife trafficking. Through an undercover investigation, they exposed a network involved in the unlawful sale of venomous snakes. The operation led to the seizure of 75 animals, including 66 live venomous snakes like the Gaboon viper, Egyptian cobra, and several species of rattlesnakes.
Thanks to the efforts of the Wildlife Confiscation Network, many of these animals were transferred to reputable facilities like the Fresno Zoo, Denver Zoo, and Toledo Zoo, where they will now serve as ambassadors in raising awareness about the impacts of wildlife trafficking.
Five individuals have been charged with a range of violations, and this operation has successfully removed these dangerous species from the illegal market.
Non-native venomous reptiles threaten our ecosystems and public safety, so it’s essential to stay vigilant. If you have any information about illegal wildlife activity, please report it anonymously to the CalTIP hotline at 888-334-2258 or the Tip411 app.
