Authorities Search for Michael Ehmen Sex Offender Who Removed GPS After Animal Shelter Break-In

Ehmen, a transient from Lansing, Michigan, was initially arrested on August 17, 2026, for sex offender registration violations and for obstructing or delaying law enforcement officers. On August 20, he was released on his own recognizance (OR) from the Modoc County Jail under court-ordered conditions that mandated GPS ankle monitoring.

On the morning of August 21, city personnel arrived at the Alturas City Pound to find the facility broken into and vandalized, with two of Ehmen’s three dogs missing. GPS tracking data placed Ehmen in the immediate area of the city pound during the late evening hours of August 20.

When local officers and deputies searched the location corresponding to his last known signal, they recovered the GPS monitoring device, which had been forcibly removed from his person.
