Spring has arrived at Lake Almanor, and the Smallmouth bass fishing is exceptional this season. Currently, water temperatures range from 46-48 degrees in the main body to 48-51 degrees on the western side. Expected warm weather should increase temperatures to the mid-50s, prompting bass to search for spawning locations.
Fishing conditions vary, with some days seeing limited activity and others experiencing more significant catches. On one day, no Smallmouths were caught despite them chasing reaction baits, while the next day yielded 23 catches in under five hours. It’s important to note that Smallmouths at Lake Almanor spawn in colder waters compared to other lakes.
Anglers should target shallow flats and warmer coves with small rock points as bass are actively feeding in preparation for spawning. Reaction baits such as jerk and rip baits can lead to larger catches, though patience is required as bites may be infrequent but sizeable. Bright colors like white/red are recommended for the stained water conditions.
It’s crucial to practice catch and release during April and May to ensure successful spawning and reproduction of the bass population.
