February Weather Summary …

After a dry January, the month of February brought the Almanor basin a considerable amount of precipitation. Twenty six inches of snowfall were recorded on the west shore, bringing our season total to 67.5 inches or 68% of the long-term average amount for this point in the season. Rainfall was more impressive. Between the water content of the snowfall and actual rain in February, we added 11.86 inches of water to our accumulation. That brings our season total to 33.13 inches, or 143% of average at this point. That total is actually more than our annual average amount of precipitation, and we still have another four months to go before we reach the end of our customary July thru June water season.

February temperatures were an odd lot. Our average morning low was 20.2 degrees, which is about 2 degrees cooler than the norm for the month. But our average afternoon high was about 3 degrees warmer than the norm at 49.1 degrees. Overall, we were not far off the long-term expectation for February. We had 27 mornings with lows at or below freezing, and five of those mornings were at temperatures at or below 10 degrees. Our extreme low was 2 degrees, early in the month, and our extreme high was 68 degrees on the last day of the month.
