Susanville Police Department Emphasizes Road Safety During National Bicycle Safety Month

In recognition of National Bicycle Safety Month this May, the Susanville Police Department urges cyclists and drivers to stay vigilant and prioritize road safety.

Recent data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration highlights the need for increased caution. In 2022, 1,105 cyclists were killed in accidents, and 46,195 were injured. These numbers represent a troubling increase from the previous year.
To address these alarming trends, the Susanville Police Department will conduct a series of traffic safety operations throughout May. These efforts will focus on curbing driver behaviors that endanger cyclists and pedestrians, such as speeding, illegal turns, failure to yield, and running stop signs or red lights.

The department offers a few Safety Guidelines for Drivers:

  • Slow Down: Adhere to speed limits, especially near intersections.
  • Check for Cyclists and Pedestrians: Look carefully before turning or opening a car door near streets or bike paths.
  • Maintain Safe Distance: Be patient when traveling behind cyclists and provide ample space when passing. California law requires at least 3 feet of clearance, or changing lanes if possible.
  • Avoid Distractions: Refrain from using your phone or driving while impaired.

Safety Guidelines for Cyclists:

  • Use Lights at Night: Make yourself visible in low-light conditions.
  • Wear Helmets: Although not mandatory for those over 18, helmets significantly reduce the risk of head injury.
  • Follow Traffic Laws: Ride in the same direction as traffic and adhere to the same rules as other vehicles.
  • Yield to Pedestrians: Pedestrians have the right-of-way at marked and unmarked crosswalks.

A grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration funds this safety initiative. The department says to Stay safe on the roads and remember to share the road and look out for one another.
