The Susanville Police Department is highlighting the importance of pedestrian safety this September as part of California’s Pedestrian Safety Month. The department urges drivers to slow down and stay alert for pedestrians on the roads, emphasizing that taking extra precautions can significantly reduce the risk of crashes and injuries.
Recent data from the Governors Highway Safety Association projects that 7,318 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes across the United States in 2023. In California, pedestrian fatalities account for over 27 percent of all traffic-related deaths, underscoring the need for increased awareness and safety measures.
The Susanville Police Department offers the following safety tips for drivers and pedestrians:
If driving,
Reduce speed and be prepared to stop for pedestrians at both marked and unmarked crosswalks, especially at intersections.
Avoid blocking crosswalks while waiting to turn.
Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
If walking,
Use crosswalks where drivers expect to see foot traffic, and always stay alert when crossing streets.
Remember that at 30 mph, it takes at least 90 feet for a vehicle to come to a complete stop.
Make yourself visible to drivers, especially at night, by wearing bright or reflective clothing or carrying a flashlight.
Be extra cautious when crossing streets at night or on busier roads with higher speed limits.
You are encouraged to share your thoughts on pedestrian safety by participating in the Go Safely Movement, a traffic safety survey from the California Office of Traffic Safety, available at gosafelyca.org.
This awareness effort is supported by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, funded through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
