Scammers Impersonate Sheriff’s Dispatchers, Targeting Victims for Money

Scammers are portraying themselves as dispatchers from the Lassen County Sheriff’s office.

Sheriff John McGarva says those who have fallen victim to this scam have reported receiving alarming calls alleging their failure to comply with a subpoena from the Lassen County Grand Jury that has resulted in an outstanding warrant for their arrest. To resolve this situation, those targeted are directed to visit local stores and use kiosks to load funds onto prepaid cards, which are then instructed to be sent in as payment to clear the alleged warrant.

However, the Sheriff affirms that the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office does not handle warrants or subpoena service in this way. Legitimate communications regarding warrants or subpoenas would be conducted through official channels, typically in person.

In light of these fraudulent activities, the Sheriff’s Office strongly advises you to exercise caution and refrain from disclosing personal information or making payments to individuals making such deceptive claims.

If you have any questions or concerns about this matter, the Sheriff’s Office can be reached directly at (530) 257-6121.
