Plumas County Set to Rename Offensive Road Following Community Input

Plumas County is moving forward with plans to rename “Sq_ Carpet Lane,” a road identified as containing an offensive term. The Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing next Tuesday, October 15, at 11 a.m., inviting community members to share their thoughts on new name options for the road.

The term “sq_” is widely recognized as a slur against Indigenous and Native women, prompting the California Advisory Committee on Geographic Names (CACGN) to request its removal from place names throughout the state. Plumas County is among the areas affected, with this road chosen for renaming as part of a broader effort to promote respect and inclusivity.

At the hearing, the Board will discuss names that honor the region’s Indigenous heritage, incorporate Indigenous languages, or reflect the area’s historical significance. The county has been collaborating closely with local Native American tribes to ensure the new name is culturally respectful and meaningful.

Residents are encouraged to attend the hearing at the courthouse in Quincy to voice their opinions. Written comments can also be submitted in advance to the Planning Department.

This initiative is part of a statewide effort to replace offensive place names with ones that celebrate California’s diverse history and Indigenous cultures.
