PG&E Forecasts Above-Average Lake Water Levels

PG&E forecasts above-normal water levels at Lake Almanor and Bucks Lake this summer due to higher precipitation and snowpack.

Limited releases will keep Bucks Lake’s water level elevated throughout the season. The projections were shared during a virtual meeting discussing PG&E’s water operations for the two lakes. Lake Almanor is expected to be 4 to 5 feet above normal, with precipitation in the basin at 123% of average and a forecasted spring runoff of 180% of average. By July 4, Lake Almanor is projected to reach approximately 4,492 feet in elevation, marginally decreasing by Labor Day.

Bucks Lake is estimated to exceed expected levels by 2 feet, potentially overflowing in late spring to early summer. Limited releases and ongoing dam work will maintain the lake’s level around 5,100 feet until July 4, slightly decreasing by Labor Day.

PG&E assures that Butt Valley Reservoir will operate within normal range. To ensure safety, PG&E advises following water safety precautions such as obeying signs, using the buddy system, avoiding diving into unfamiliar water, wearing life jackets, and actively supervising children near the water.
