The Modoc National Forest is gearing up to host a special gathering for residents to witness a rare astronomical event. On October 14th, the northern hemisphere is poised to experience an annular solar eclipse, a phenomenon where the moon passes between the Sun and Earth while it is at its farthest point from Earth, creating a mesmerizing “ring of fire” effect. NASA has designated Alturas as a prime location to observe both a partial and annular eclipse.

You can mark your calendars for the event as the Modoc National Forest Headquarters opens its doors from 8am to 11am on the 14th of October. Additional event details will be unveiled in the upcoming weeks, ensuring everyone has the necessary information to make the most of this rare opportunity.

During an annular eclipse, looking directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection designed for solar viewing is never safe. You can Review safety guidelines by visiting solarsystem.nasa.gov.
