The search for 39-year-old inmate Caleb Duerr has entered its fourth day after he escaped from the Plumas County Jail during a scheduled recreation period, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office. Duerr breached the chain-link fence in the jail’s rec area, fleeing the facility around 8 Friday morning.
The Plumas County Sheriff’s Office says an immediate, coordinated search was launched with support from the California Highway Patrol, the Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement Division. K9 units from Sierra, Butte, and Yuba County Sheriff’s Offices have been deployed, along with air support from the California Highway Patrol.
Last seen Friday around 9 am, Duerr was spotted at the intersection of County Road A23 and Highway 70, yet his whereabouts remain unknown. Law enforcement agencies across Northern California and Northern Nevada have been alerted to assist in the search. The public is urged to report any sightings or suspicious activity to the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office.
Despite a newly constructed jail, the Sheroff’s Office clarifies, that the escape occurred at the old jail facility, as no inmates have yet been moved to the new correctional center.
Other concerns that arose from the community included the delayed use of the Genasys Emergency Alert System, the Sheriff’s Office highlighted the efforts of its lone dispatcher, who worked efficiently to mobilize resources and issue an alert within an hour of confirming the escape.
