Dave Keller, a longstanding trustee of the Plumas Unified School District (PUSD), will remain in his position temporarily after no candidates filed to run for his seat in the upcoming November 5, 2024, election. According to election regulations, if no one steps forward, the incumbent continues until a successor is appointed by the board, leaving Keller responsible for finding his replacement.
Keller has been a member of the PUSD school board since 2016, succeeding Bret Cook. His decision to run for the board was inspired by Mike Chelotti, a former district superintendent and teacher. Keller, who previously coached at Greenville Junior-Senior High School, has deep ties to the community with three of his children graduating from Greenville High and another from Quincy Junior-Senior High School.
During his tenure, Keller highlights the passage of Measure B—a $50 million bond measure for upgrading school facilities—as an early achievement. However, his role was not without challenges, including the 2022 retirement and subsequent passing of Superintendent Terry Oestreich, who had steered the district through the COVID pandemic and the Dixie Fire. Keller’s own family was affected by the Dixie Fire, losing their home and relocating within district boundaries, allowing him to continue his service.
The resignation of Superintendent Bill Roderick in October 2024, described by Keller as a difficult personal experience, added to the challenges faced by the board. The district is currently dealing with a $2 million budget shortfall, which Keller attributes to rising costs and unforeseen circumstances.
With the trustee position open and no candidates forthcoming, Keller will continue his duties until a successor is identified. The district has posted the trustee job description online and is seeking applicants who are at least 18 years old and reside within district 2 boundaries. The role includes an annual stipend of $500.
Keller advises his future successor to take the position seriously, emphasizing the importance of facts and collaboration with board members and staff. He stresses the need for commitment to the students, as board decisions have a significant impact on their education.
Interested candidates can apply online or pick up an application at the district office located at 50 Church Street, Quincy.
