Superior Court Judge Karen Dixon has postponed the sentencing hearing for Nancy Louise Selvage, the former Plumas County Human Resources Director, originally scheduled for May 16. A new date has been set for July 10.
Selvage, age 70, was found guilty on March 25 of obtaining money through false pretenses, a felony involving a conflict of interest. She had pleaded no contest to one of the three charges brought against her on November 16, 2023.
The conviction was reached after a day of negotiations involving Judge Dixon, Selvage’s attorney Eric Acevedo, and Assistant District Attorney Brian Hagan. The anticipated two-week jury trial concluded in just one day, resulting in the dismissal of a jury pool of approximately 200 individuals.
As part of the sentencing, it was expected that Selvage would be ordered to repay Plumas County a total of $103,679.63 in restitution, while also being compensated $16,820 for accrued vacation and sick leave. However, Acevedo indicated that these amounts might be “offset” due to Selvage’s early plea. Hagan suggested that the vacation and sick leave compensation be deducted from the restitution amount, which could reduce the total Selvage would need to pay. Acevedo raised concerns about this proposal, indicating that it might necessitate a separate restitution hearing.
During the hearing, Judge Dixon noted that it seemed as though Selvage might be considering withdrawing her plea. Acevedo acknowledged this possibility. Both parties attended the hearing via Zoom, which was further complicated by motions that were emailed to Dixon but not received in time.
Acevedo has stated his intention to file additional motions ahead of the July 10 hearing, at which Dixon will address restitution and any other motions presented.
