Today is tax day, at least for seven counties in California as they were not part of the deadline extension announced by Governor Gavin Newsom last month. The state of California Franchise Tax Board declared the extension for 51 of the 58 counties under emergency disaster declarations, citing severe winter storms, flooding, landslides, and mudslides in January and February that affected counties such as Sacramento, Butte, and Tehama the most. However, Lassen, Plumas, Modoc, Sierra, and Shasta counties were not included in the extension, all in the most northeastern part of the state, despite experiencing record snowfall and flooding. Kern and Imperial counties are the two additional counties not included in the extension.
Governor Newsom said the 5-month extension of the state tax deadline aligns with the federal IRS extension to October 16th under the same reasoning. The Governor stated this shows the state’s commitment to helping Californians recover from the natural disasters, saying that the state is “working swiftly to help recovering Californians get back on their feet.”
Over a dozen atmospheric rivers have impacted the state since December, resulting in widespread flooding in the valley and historic snowfall throughout the Sierras.
