Lassen Volcanic National Park opens its 30-mile highway for the summer and Fall seasons. Operations to re-open the highway was stalled due to the higher-than-average snowpack, and the park service says you should still prepare for winter conditions in higher elevations when visiting. This includes snow-covered trails, Lassen Peak and Brokeoff Mountain limiting access. However, the well-loved Bumpass Hell trail remains closed due to the snow and ice.
In other areas of the park, you can access the road to Butte Lake, but Warner Valley Road is only open to bikers and hikers at this time, while Dixie Fire hazard repair work continues to have Juniper Lake Road closed to all traffic.
Winter damage at Sulpher Works has also limited traffic along Highway 89. Thirty feet of sidewalk about one mile north of the visitor center collapsed during the intense winter weather the park received. Only one lane is open; you can expect delays in this part of the park.
Many campgrounds have also opened; others remain closed due to Dixie Fire recovery work.
The park service reminds you that you can plan your visit with Dixie Fire safety considerations by visiting the national park’s After Dixie web page and can view current trail and campground conditions on the Lassen Volcanic National Park’s website.
