Just days after opening the park’s highway to visitors, the Lassen Volcanic National Park has cut off access through the park to vehicles by closing Highway 89 as winter weather arrived in the park yesterday afternoon.
The park’s highway closed at 3:30 Monday to what park officials say was because of an anticipated “incoming snowstorm” that evening. Officials say the northwest and southwest park entrance areas will remain open.
Before traveling, check weather forecasts and road conditions.

Lassen Volcanic National Park officials have reopened Highway 89 through the entire park, welcoming visitors to enjoy autumn views before winter closures set in. The park has removed all road signs and barricades near Emerald Lake in preparation for the season ahead.
The popular Bumpass Hell trail is open; however, officials urge hikers to exercise caution due to slick conditions on the trail. Those planning a trip should be prepared, as snowfall is forecast for Sunday evening into Monday, potentially limiting park access in the coming days.
The park will continue to provide updates via social media and its website. Visitors can also check real-time weather forecasts for different park locations.
