Forecasters have issued a Particularly Dangerous Situation (PDS) Red Flag Warning, in effect from 11 AM to 8 PM on Wednesday, for the Sierra Front, including the area affected by the Davis Fire. This rare event highlights the severity of the conditions, as gusty winds and extremely dry conditions are expected to pose significant risks to the region.
“Prepare now for rapid fire growth” is the message forecasters with the Reno National Weather Service are saying. Those in the affected areas are urged to prepare immediately.
The PDS Red Flag Warning is a highly uncommon alert, with this being only the sixth such warning issued in the history of the National Weather Service in Reno. The last PDS Red Flag Warning was issued on September 15-16, 2019.
The The Davis Fire, which started on September 7, 2024, in Davis Creek Regional Park south of Reno, Nevada, has grown to approximately 5,596 acres and remains 0% contained.
Around 20,000 people are under evacuations with power outages affecting nearly 3,000 homes.
