On Monday, a couple of earthquakes rattled Lake Almanor near Chester.

According to the Geological Survey, a magnitude 3.5 quake struck around 7:30 a.m. at a depth of about one mile, strong enough to startle vacationers out of bed. The epicenter was along a known fault line on the peninsula’s west side.

An earlier, smaller quake with a magnitude of 2.1 struck near the tip of the peninsula.

Several small quakes have been affecting the area since May of last year, following larger 5.5 and 5.2 earthquakes that rocked the region. Tremors were felt as far away as Susanville, Nevada, and the Bay Area.
