Crews will conduct prescribed fires this week on the Eagle Lake and Hat Creek Ranger Districts. The Drake Underburn near Cal Mountain and Poison Lake on the Eagle Lake District will cover about 160 acres. The Eastside Underburn near Blacks Ridge and Halls Flat on the Hat Creek District will cover around 435 acres.
Smoke will appear from nearby areas and along Highways 89 and 44. Travelers should watch for workers and heavy equipment near roadways in these zones.
An underburn means crews burn vegetation under the forest canopy. This includes grasses, leaf litter, fallen needles, branches, brush, and sometimes small groups of trees. The goal is to clear fuels that could feed larger wildfires and promote forest health.
If you drive through these areas, stay alert and follow any instructions from fire personnel. Your safety matters during these operations.
