SHARE NOW

The USDA Forest Service will resume gather operations for the Devil’s Garden wild horse gather contract beginning January 21, 2025 for a short duration, in order to continue moving toward the appropriate management level of 206-402 horses on the territory as prescribed by the 2013 Devil’s Garden Plateau Wild Horse Territory Management Plan.

The Modoc National Forest will continue working with CD Warner Livestock LLC on gathering operations. They are utilizing mechanized equipment and bait traps to gather horses. If you come across a livestock corral in the forest, please avoid the area.

The Forest will offer two viewing days on Friday, January 23 or Saturday, January 24. Blinds have space for up to 4 viewers per day. To make viewing reservations please email [email protected] and include your name, phone number, requested viewing dates and the number of viewers in your party. If you are unable to email reservation requests, please call (530) 233-8738.

Viewers with reservations should arrive at 225 West Eighth St. in Alturas by 7 a.m. to follow forest personnel to the parking location. Viewers should be prepared to drive in rugged terrain, walk long distances across uneven and muddy terrain, and may be exposed to inclement weather conditions such as rain and snow. Viewers should be prepared to remain on site until gather operations have concluded for the day, and must not interfere with gather operations.

Please bring plenty of food, water, and wear neutral colored clothing. We also recommend bringing a folding chair, sunscreen, wide brimmed hat, and sunglasses. There are no restroom facilities at trap sites.
