City Council recognizes June as pride month for the 2nd year and more years to come. Wednesday, Mayor McCourt and the city council recognized the LGBTQ+ citizens of Susanville in a proclamation declaring the city will “commit to supporting visibility, dignity, and equality” of the LGBTQ+ in the city’s diverse community. The proclamation will be displayed at City Hall in recognition.
Those of the LGBTQ Community thanked the council for making Susanville a safe community they can call home. During the commenting period, others of the LGBTQ community added that they hope words of hate and slander will no longer be said and that more people will become better educated on the LGBTQ community and be willing to work together. This references the hate graffiti that defaced the Lassen Family Services building earlier this week, now being investigated as a hate crime.
One LGBTQ+ community member spoke during public comment, telling the council that this incident frightened the LGBTQ community, even fearing for thier lives but came together to gather and bring awareness prior to Wednesday’s council meeting, gathering outside City Hall, many declaring, “We are here, and We are Queer, and this is our home too.”
