A maximum enforcement period will begin across California highways for the independence day weekend. The CHP and Office of Traffic Safety team up to urge drivers to ‘SLOW DOWN’ and save lives.

CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee says, “Reckless driving is a serious concern on California’s roadways, and it is the responsibility of CHP and OTS to help keep the public safe,” adding that “Every year, speed is the leading cause of roadway crashes in [the] state, resulting in thousands of injuries and hundreds of deaths.”

Starting Friday, the max enforcement will begin at 6 pm and continue through Tuesday, July 4, at midnight. This means throughout the extended holiday weekend; you will see all available CHP officers on patrol holding drivers accountable for dangerous, unlawful behaviors like speeding and driving under the influence.

The CHP office shares that Forty-four people were killed in crashes in California during last year’s 4th of July weekend, with the department alone making nearly 1,000 arrests for DUIs over the 78-hour holiday enforcement effort.

You are encouraged to help keep yourself and others on the road safe by designating a sober driver, using public transit or a ride-share service in our celebration plans, and if you see or suspect an impaired driver, call 9-1-1 immediately.
