The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has announced the commencement of preliminary tree work for the Almanor West Rehabilitation Project along State Route 89 in Plumas County. This project spans the area near Canyondam, extending from just north of the Lake Almanor Spillway to State Route 36.
The primary objectives of the project are to enhance safety, improve driver comfort and ride quality, and reduce roadway maintenance needs. As part of the improvements, shoulders will be widened to a minimum of 4 feet between post mile 30.2 and post mile 39.0, and to 8 feet from post mile 39.0 to post mile 42.2.
To facilitate the construction activities, traffic control measures are in place from Monday to Friday, operating from dawn to dusk. Motorists traveling on SR 89 should anticipate delays of up to 15 minutes in the specified area. In some instances, 24-hour traffic control may be necessary, particularly when traffic is routed over unpaved surfaces.
The rehabilitation project is a $43.5 million investment and encompasses 160 working days, each requiring traffic management. Caltrans has indicated that the majority of construction efforts are slated to begin in the spring and summer months, contingent on weather conditions.
