As wildfire risks ease with cooler temperatures and increased humidity, CAL FIRE has announced that burn permit suspensions in Lassen, Modoc, and Plumas Counties will be lifted effective Friday, November 1, 2024, at 6:00 a.m. Residents and property owners with valid agriculture or residential burn permits may now resume burning on approved burn days. CAL FIRE’s Lassen Modoc Unit Chief, Eric Ewing, noted the move aligns with the anticipated arrival of winter weather conditions.

In coordination with CAL FIRE’s Lassen Modoc Unit, the Susanville Fire Department (SFD) will also lift the suspension on all burn permits and open burning within the City of Susanville, effective November 1. SFD advises residents holding valid residential burn permits to resume burning on approved days, which can be verified by calling the Air Pollution Control District line at 530-257-BURN (2876).

All residents planning to burn must have a valid burn permit on hand and follow all specified guidelines. Burn permits are available at the Susanville Fire Department at 1505 Main Street, where payment by check or money order is accepted, or at Susanville City Hall at 66 N. Lassen Street.

Burn Guidelines:

Only dry, natural vegetation like leaves, pine needles, and tree trimmings may be burned.
Trash, painted wood, and other debris are prohibited.
Burning is not allowed on windy days.
Piles must remain within four feet in diameter and height, surrounded by a 10-foot, bare-soil safety zone.
A water source, shovel, and constant adult supervision are required to maintain control of the burn.
CAL FIRE permits are still mandatory, and it’s important to stay in control of your burn to avoid any legal trouble. Safe burning practices are essential for fire hazard reduction, while state and local agencies will also use this time for prescribed burns that support forest health.
