A suspect is in custody after a Quincy home was set afire and a man killed Saturday. The Plumas county sheriff’s office says there is no outstanding threat to the 600 block of Edwards Avenue neighborhood.

Early Saturday morning, the sheriff’s office says a call was received from a woman in the home who stated a man had started a fire in her home. When deputies arrived, they found a man, identified as 71-year-old James R. Cross, had been stabbed. He later succumbed to his injuries while in the hospital.

The Quincy Fire Department quickly extinguished the fire and did not spread to nearby homes. A suspect was swiftly identified as 38-year-old Owen Magers of Quincy.

A thorough investigation is underway by the sheriff’s office with the support of the California Department of Justice.

Sheriff Todd Johns extended the department’s sympathies to the family and friends of the victim, James Cook. “The PCSO is committed to conducting a thorough investigation to bring justice…and ensure the safety and well-being of [the] community.”
The sheriff says more details cannot be revealed at this time but will update the community when possible.
