Public Safety Announcement: Mountain Lion Sightings in Downieville, CA

The Sierra County Sheriff’s Office has received reports of mountain lion sightings in the Upper Main Street area of Downieville. Early this morning (1/13/25) one of three lions was killed while attacking a dog. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) responded and is actively investigating the situation.

Out of an abondance of caution, the county park on Upper Main Street in Downieville will be closed until further notice. This includes the playground, tennis courts and basketball court.

We urge all residents and visitors in the Downieville area to exercise caution and report any mountain lion sightings to the Sheriff’s Office.

Tips for Staying Safe:

1. Keep pets indoors, especially at night.

2. If you must take pets outside, keep them on a leash and close to you.

3. Avoid hiking or jogging alone, especially at dawn, dusk, or night.

If you encounter a mountain lion:

1. Stay calm and do not run.

2. Make yourself appear larger by raising your arms and speaking firmly.

3. Slowly back away, giving the lion an opportunity to retreat.

4. If the lion acts aggressively, throw objects, yell, and fight back if attacked.
