Magnitude 5.5 Earthquake Shakes Western Nevada and Northern California with No Major Damage Reported

A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck western Nevada on Monday evening, shaking communities across the region and sending tremors into parts of Northern California, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The quake occurred at 6:29 p.m., approximately 12 miles east-southeast of Silver Springs, Nevada, at a depth of about 6 miles. Shaking was felt widely across western Nevada, including in Reno, Portola, as well as in parts of Northern California.

According to USGS data, the earthquake reached a maximum intensity of VII on the Modified Mercalli scale, indicating very strong shaking. The USGS assigned a “green” alert on its PAGER system, suggesting a low likelihood of significant casualties or economic damage.

Following the main event, a series of smaller aftershocks ranging in magnitude from 2.6 to 3.7 were recorded by the Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno.

As of Monday night, no major damage or injuries had been reported. Authorities continue to monitor the situation.
