LNF Seeks Input on Wilderness Permits

The Lassen National Forest is looking to go paperless. Wilderness permits are required if you plan to backpack into the national forests at a significant distance from trails and provide overnight access to undeveloped areas. Superintendent Jim Richardson says, “An online permit system can help you plan and receive important notices from a park about your trip, such as the approach of a wildfire, for example. The proposed online permit system would go into effect on January 1st. If approved, you could see Online registration stations installed at the Manzanita Lake and Southwest entrance station areas with remote self-registration stations removed from Butte Lake, Warner Valley, and Juniper Lake. Your input is needed before its implementation. The project would place a non-refundable administration fee of $6 per permit, plus an additional per-trip wilderness permit fee of $5 for each person 16 years and older. Funds will directly benefit Lassen Volcanic National Park and are used for wilderness management and improvement work such as trail repair, wilderness patrols, and resource monitoring.
