Five years after the Dixie Fire, some of the burned trees are still serving a purpose. The Bureau of Land Management is inviting the public to collect firewood for just $1 per cord while helping clean up the fire-scarred landscape near Chester.
The BLM is offering low-cost firewood permits for downed trees located on BLM-managed public land near the Chester Airport. The permits allow individuals and families to gather their own firewood from trees burned in the 2021 Dixie Fire for just $1 per cord.
Officials say the program not only provides an affordable source of firewood, but also helps improve forest health by removing dead trees. Clearing the downed timber can support healthier, more resilient forests and improve habitat for wildlife and native plants.
Permits can be purchased online through the BLM’s forest products permitting system and will remain available until all designated trees have been collected.
Those planning to participate are reminded to stay within the designated Chester Airport Parcel Fuelwood Collection Area and keep vehicles on existing roads while gathering firewood.
