If you’re traveling this Independence Day weekend, expect to see more California Highway Patrol officers on the road.
The CHP has launched its annual Maximum Enforcement Period, which runs from 6:01 p.m. Wednesday, July 2, through 11:59 p.m. Sunday, July 5, with additional officers patrolling highways in an effort to reduce crashes and save lives.
The increased enforcement comes in response to troubling statistics from last year’s holiday weekend. During the same enforcement period, CHP officers responded to 850 speed-related crashes statewide. Of those, 400 resulted in injuries, and seven were fatal.
Throughout the holiday weekend, motorists can expect increased patrols, higher staffing levels, visible enforcement, and public education efforts focused on speeding, impaired driving, and seat belt use.
CHP is reminding drivers to slow down, buckle up, never drive under the influence, and be patient as traffic increases during the busy holiday travel period.
“Our goal is simple,” the agency says, “to reduce injury crashes and save lives.”
Officials encourage everyone to enjoy the holiday responsibly and help make the roads safer for all travelers.
