Plumas National Forest Urges Holiday Visitors to Help Prevent Wildfires

As the Fourth of July holiday weekend approaches, officials with the Plumas National Forest are reminding residents and visitors to do their part to prevent wildfires and stay safe while enjoying the outdoors.

Although the forest has not yet entered official fire restrictions, officials say vegetation is continuing to dry and restrictions are expected within the next few weeks.

Fire officials also remind the public that all fireworks—including sparklers and poppers—are prohibited on all National Forest lands, including developed campgrounds and recreation sites. Residential burn permits also remain suspended, and any outdoor burning is currently prohibited until local CAL FIRE units lift the suspension.

Visitors are encouraged to practice campfire safety by never leaving fires unattended, ensuring they are completely extinguished before leaving, and considering portable camp stoves as an alternative. Drivers should avoid parking in tall grass, secure trailer chains, maintain tires, and make sure spark arresters are in working order to reduce the risk of accidental fires.

With holiday crowds expected, forest officials are also encouraging visitors to slow down on forest roads and lakes, wear appropriate safety gear, keep dogs under control, properly store food to avoid attracting bears, and let someone know their travel plans before heading into the backcountry.

Anyone who spots a wildfire or experiences an emergency is urged to call 911 immediately.
