The Argentine Rock Lookout Repair Group announces repair projects are beginning for the year. Organizers say they hope to finish the repair project this season. The group has been gradually working on the lookout since fall 2020, and volunteers have made significant progress.
The pandemic slowed progress in 2021 along with the Dixie Fire, but the group did receive a grant from the Forest Service Resource Advisory Committee at that time, which allowed gravel work on the road and beginning construction on steel stairs. In 2023, 180 sacks of concrete found their way up the hill on the backs of numerous volunteers. In 2024, the heavy steel went up the hill with 12 volunteers on each piece.
In 2025 two sets of stairs were constructed and a roof put on the building. Organizers say another grant awarded in fall 2025 will accelerate the project by enabling the group to hire professional contractors who will mount the siding, install windows, install a solar system and lightning protection and more.
Chairman Jeff Greef has been organizing the project through it all and said he is pleased with the community effort to make it happen. “We’ve had dozens of community volunteers come up and help, which has been a lot of fun and very productive,” said Greef. “And we are very grateful to Sierra Pacific Industries for a grant they gave us which helped pay for material supplies last year, keeping us going,” said Greef.
