Adam Doig Sentenced to Five Years

A Modoc County man has been sentenced to five years in state prison following his conviction on assault and domestic violence charges, the Modoc County District Attorney’s Office announced this week.

Adam Doig was found guilty by a jury on August 25, 2025, of assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury, a felony violation under Penal Code §245(a)(4). The jury also found true an enhancement for inflicting great bodily injury during the commission of domestic violence under Penal Code §12022.7(e).

Doig was additionally convicted of two misdemeanor charges: domestic violence (Penal Code §273.5(a)) and possession of a dirk or dagger (Penal Code §21310).

According to prosecutors, Doig strangled and threatened to kill his victim, who managed to flee and seek help from law enforcement. The Alturas Police Department quickly responded, leading to Doig’s arrest and subsequent charges.

At sentencing, the Modoc County Probation Department recommended a five-year term in state prison. The District Attorney’s Office argued for a longer mid-term sentence of seven years, citing aggravating circumstances. Superior Court Judge John Harr ultimately adopted the probation department’s recommendation and sentenced Doig to five years in state prison.

District Attorney Nina Salarno commended the victim for her courage and cooperation throughout the case. “Statistically, if a victim is strangled even once, she is 750% more likely to be killed by her abuser,” Salarno noted, emphasizing the seriousness of the offense.

Salarno also expressed gratitude to the Alturas Police Department for its quick response and to Assistant District Attorney Richard Cotta for his work in prosecuting the case. “Interagency collaboration remains vital in conveying that domestic violence will not be tolerated in Modoc County,” she said.
