The Plumas County Board of Supervisors abandoned its plan to discuss and potentially adopt a resolution opposing Proposition 50, a statewide ballot measure to temporarily redraw the state’s congressional district maps. The action came within minutes of opening the board’s Oct. 7 meeting.

County Counsel Joshua Brechtel brought the resolution to the supervisors’ attention, citing California Elections Code 319.5 (a). It prohibits electioneering, which the code defines as “visible display or audible dissemination of information that advocates for or against any candidate or measure on the ballot within 100 feet of a polling place.”

Board meetings are held on the third floor of the Plumas County Courthouse. As soon as ballots were mailed to voters Oct. 6 the courthouse became a polling place, said Marcy DeMartile, Plumas County clerk-recorder and registrar of voters. No election information can be distributed within 100 feet of the courthouse, she said.
