The Susanville City Council recognized Public Safety Chief Mike Bollinger on his retirement at the council’s Wednesday, Oct. 1 meeting.

The Susanville City Council bids its first Public Safety Chief, Mike Bollinger, a fond farewell on his retirement — City Manager Dan Newton, left, Bollinger, City Councilmember Patrick Parish, Mayor Mendy Schuster, Councilmembers Dawn Miller, Russ Brown and Curtis Bortle.

“It is with mixed emotions that we are saying goodbye tonight,” said City Manager Dan Newton. “It is our public safety chief’s last city council meeting. He will be retiring before our next one, so with mixed emotions we’re very happy for Chief Bollinger moving on to the next exciting part of his life. We’re going to miss him dearly. He’s our first public safety chief for the city, and he’s done an excellent job as you all know, working hard to integrate the fire department and the police department. From a camaraderie level, a partnership level, there’s been a tremendous increase in the interaction between the two departments since Chief Bollinger’s been in the role. It’s a very challenging role, a very taxing role. Obviously, it’s a very visible role within the community. There’s a lot of pressure, a lot of expectations, a lot of legal rules and regulations that have to be abided by and adhered to, and Chief Bollinger’s done an excellent job. So we just wanted to recognize him tonight, let him know we’re going to miss him and wish him well.”

“We have been through a lot here with the chief,” Mayor Mendy Schuster said before she read the plaque presented to Bollinger.

It reads, “Michael Bengoa-Bollinger. With deepest appreciation for your outstanding leadership, dedicated servicing and unwavering commitment to justice, integrity and the safety of our community 2012 to 2025. Present in appreciation by the Susanville City Council.”
