Feather River College announces it will be hosting its annual fish hatchery fundraiser Saturday, Oct. 4, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event costs $10 to participate, with all proceeds benefiting the hatchery.
Participants can fish for trout with no fishing license required. Participants can bring their own pole or borrow one from the hatchery. The first two fish caught are free. There will also be an opportunity for hatchery tours, along with fundraiser items for purchase.
The FRC fish hatchery was conceived in 1982 by Jay Wright, to provide practical hands-on experience in fisheries. FRC said students learn fishery and hatchery techniques by gaining experience in tasks necessary to run an aquaculture facility. The hatchery is capable of raising trout from egg to trophy size, as well as raising a variety of aquarium fishes. The maximum capacity for the hatchery is approximately 30,000 pounds of mature trout each year. The hatchery also maintains approximately two dozen fresh- and saltwater aquariums.
The hatchery raises funds through the sale of the fish produced on site. However, organizers say the hatchery is always improving the facility and upgrading outdated equipment, which requires fundraiser events like this one to raise funds to help keep the hatchery in operation.
