The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection has allocated $5 million in grant funding to support eight projects aimed at job creation, training future forestry workers, and enhancing the role of small businesses in wildfire prevention and forest management. This funding is part of CalFire’s Business and Workforce Development Grant program, which has distributed over $100 million since 2022 to more than 100 initiatives across the state.

Assistant Chief John McCarthy of CalFire emphasized the importance of these projects, noting their contribution to building a resilient future for California’s forests and communities. The grants will facilitate various initiatives, including:

  • Job training programs for youth and entry-level forestry workers, such as the F.I.R.E. Bootcamp and Fire Forward’s workforce initiative.
  • A mentorship program connecting college forestry students with seasoned professionals, managed by the Placer Resource Conservation District.
  • Development of a web-based course by the California Licensed Foresters Association to assist individuals preparing for the Registered Professional Forester exam.
  • The continued Forestry Challenge, providing high school students practical experience in forest science and management.
  • Business expansion efforts for Diversified Resources, Inc., and Thompson Land Management, enabling them to acquire equipment for wildfire risk reduction and forest restoration.
  • Significant investment in mass timber production at Mad River Mass Timber in Humboldt County, promoting job creation and sustainable wood use in construction.

These initiatives are expected to train over 300 individuals, create or maintain numerous jobs, and enhance the capacity to manage thousands of acres annually. Full details of the grantees and their projects can be accessed on CalFire’s Wood Products and Bioenergy Program webpage.

These efforts align with California’s Wildfire and Forest Resilience Action Plan, which focuses on improving forest health, safeguarding communities, and promoting climate benefits through sustainable forestry practices. Funded by California Climate Investments and General Funds, these projects also aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while bolstering the forest sector.
