Dog Attack in Calpine Prompts Seizure of Animals and Investigation

Calpine, CA — On Saturday, July 19, 2025, at approximately 10:20 a.m., the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a dog attack involving a woman who was bitten while walking along Coates Avenue in Calpine. Deputies responded immediately to the scene, and the victim was transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment of her injuries.

Upon arrival, the responding deputy learned that the dog owner had left town prior to law enforcement’s arrival. A friend of the owner was contacted, and ultimately, two dogs were seized pursuant to Sierra County Code. The dogs were transported to the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe, where they are currently under quarantine. They will remain in the custody of the Sheriff’s Office pending the outcome of a formal vicious animal hearing or until the owner voluntarily surrenders them.

This incident marks a concerning escalation in behavior involving the same dogs. Over the past year, the Sheriff’s Office has responded to four separate complaints regarding these animals. In three of those cases, the reporting parties declined to press charges, limiting the enforcement options available to deputies. In one prior incident, a citizen’s arrest was made for violations related to a dog at large and a dog attacking another animal. That case was referred to the District Attorney’s Office and is currently scheduled for court proceedings this week in Sierra County Superior Court.

The Sierra County Sheriff’s Office is conducting a thorough investigation into this most recent attack. We recognize the concern this incident has raised within the Calpine community and want to assure residents that public safety remains our highest priority. The dogs will remain secured and in our custody until the conclusion of the formal hearing process.

Anyone with additional information related to this incident is encouraged to contact the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office at (530) 289-3700.
