The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is actively working to mitigate damage from several landslides near Fredonyer Summit on Highway 36, situated west of Susanville. Collaborating with Tullis, Inc., the state agency is focusing on emergency pavement repairs and addressing the slides, which have been attributed to seismic activity.

Caltrans District 2 has reported that pavement conditions in the section of the highway just east of the summit are currently unsuitable for low-clearance vehicles. Drivers are advised to exercise extreme caution when traveling through this area.

Efforts are underway to grind and smooth pavement over various fault lines. A geological and survey investigation is also being conducted to devise a more comprehensive, long-term solution for the affected region.

Motorists traveling over the summit should prepare for 24/7 one-way traffic control, which may result in delays of up to 15 minutes. Caltrans warns that if conditions worsen, stop signs may be introduced, requiring drivers to halt and proceed slowly through the area.
