With nights getting colder as winter settles in, The Plumas National Forest reminds those who burn wood to keep warm that personal-use firewood is available for free with a permit and tags.
The complimentary permits save households around 50 dollars, as you are allowed to cut up to 10 cords per household.
The forest services stress before heading out, you must obtain your permit and tags and adhere to regulations, including not cutting from active timber sales or designated wilderness areas.
Ranger District Offices have permits, tags, maps, and regulations available during business hours. You can check with your local office as certain districts may invite the public to help clear hazard trees for personal use firewood.
Forest officials confirm there are hazard trees available at Whitehorse Campground in the Bucks Lake area.
Before heading to cut personal firewood, plan your trip to have proper vehicle safety and tools and be aware of changing weather conditions.
