Thirteen Union Pacific rail cars derailed early Saturday morning just north of Colfax in Placer County. The incident occurred around 3:20 a.m. near Highway 174 and Narrow Gauge Road, just outside Colfax city limits. Union Pacific reported that cleanup efforts began shortly after the derailment and an investigation is underway, though the cause has not yet been determined.

Cal Fire Nevada-Yuba-Placer unit officials confirmed awareness of the incident, reporting no injuries or fire. The Placer County Fire Department also confirmed no hazardous materials were released. The derailment occurred on a curved section of the main track, with photos showing several double-decker rail cars had jumped the track.

Tracks were cleared by noon, and train traffic resumed. However, a bus bridge remains in place for the Amtrak California Zephyr between Sacramento and Emeryville.
