On Monday, Feb 17, Redding City Hall became the focal point of a significant gathering, as hundreds of people assembled to express their views regarding the new administration. The event attracted both critics and supporters of President Trump, with nearly 300 individuals rallying against the President and the Department of Government Efficiency leader, Elon Musk.
This demonstration was part of a larger national protest dubbed “Not My Presidents Day.” Participants voiced their dissatisfaction with President Trump’s association with Musk and what they perceive as an emerging oligarchy within the White House. The protestors occupied all four corners leading to city hall, chanting slogans such as “Elon should be gone” and “Just say no.”
In contrast, with about 67% of registered voters in Shasta County having supported Trump in the November elections, his proponents were equally vocal. Supporters made their presence known with declarations like “Repent Redding, California, Repent! Follow Jesus Christ!” and comments opposing transgender participation in women’s sports, reflecting Trump’s recent policy changes on transgender individuals in sports and the military.
Despite the potential for conflict, the Redding Police Department reported no incidents of violence related to the rally. This event followed another protest just nine days earlier in downtown Redding, where demonstrators opposed Trump’s immigration policy revisions.
Recent CBS News polls indicate that many Americans view President Trump as “tough and energetic,” acknowledging that he is fulfilling campaign promises.
