Sierra County shierffs office reported receiving multiple calls around 5 pm on Wednesday about a fire erupting in the meadow next to Camp Yuba, just north of Downieville along Highway 49. The prompt response from the Downieville Fire Dispatch mobilized fire personnel, swiftly deploying engines from the Downieville and Sierra City Fire departments, accompanied by Sheriff Deputies. Additionally, the US Forest Service was swiftly contacted and dispatched several fire engines to assist in containment efforts.
Upon their arrival, responders estimated the fire had engulfed about 2 acres, and spreading, yet fortunately away from nearby homes.
Authorities said while the fire consumed mostly low-level brush, it did manage to engulf a few sizable trees and a power pole, leading to disruptions in phone service within the Sierra City, Green Acres, and Bassetts areas over the next day.
The fire was quickly suppressed and contained to three acres.
Initial investigations conducted by the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office found that the cause of the blaze was disposed of wood stove ashes by a local resident around a tree, igniting the blaze.
