The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), along with the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and the Society for the Conservation of Bighorn Sheep (SCBS), is on the lookout for volunteers for the Annual Bighorn Sheep Survey: the catch, its in the San Gabriel Mountains of Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties.

You’d be part of a group heading to a specific spot early in the morning. Your job will be to Identify and count how many sheep you see using a simple survey form they’ll give you. You won’t be on your own – a rep from CDFW, USFS, or SCBS will lead your group.

Now, to be a part of this, you’ve got to be at least 16 years old and ready to hike one to five miles in rugged terrain. Trails will hiking over boulders, streams, steep slopes, and through thick chaparral. You’ll need binoculars or a spotting scope, too.

Mark your calendar – the survey is on Sunday, March 3, 2024, but there’s a must-attend orientation meeting on Saturday evening, March 2, at the Angeles National Forest Headquarters in Arcadia.

They’re looking for 200 volunteers, and you can sign up using the Bighorn Sheep Survey Form. If you have any questions, you can email [email protected] or give them a call at (858) 239-9505.
