Town Blight to be Addressed by Planning Commission for 2nd Time

Susanville will revisit restoration progress, or lack thereof, on the long-standing eyesore in the middle of town, the Knights Inn motel.

During a July 12 meeting last year, the Susanville Planning Commission issued an order to fix problems at the Motel on Main Street because it had become hazardous for anyone to be around. However, in the past year, the motel owners have done little to fix the issues and remove the problems on the property. The city says they cannot afford to do the work themselves, so more time is needed to ensure the property is fixed properly, whereas Code Enforcement has been exploring other options, such as grant funding or loans to save city resources. Another alternative the city is considering is to have a Health and Safety Receivership, which means a court would authorize someone to take over and fix the property according to state laws. If necessary, the city may take legal action, including going to court, to force the owners to comply with the order.

The planning commission will discuss the next steps on the abatement order, considering extending it for another year tomorrow; the commission is set to meet at 5:30 in City Hall.
