If you are thinking of hitting the slopes in Tahoe over the weekend, you may want to reconsider; the Sierra Avalanche Center in Truckee has issued a backcountry avalanche warning for the Greater Lake Tahoe area.
The warning states there is a high danger an avalanche may occur through Sunday. The warning a stark reminder of last week events where two avalanches occurred, killing one skier at Palasades, and injuring several others.
A storm coming through the area will bring heavy new snow and gale-force winds. The National Weather Service says this will load already “problematic weak layers”
If your planning to ski the slopes this weakened check your mountain’s latest conditions, traveling in, near, or below backcountry avalanche terrain is not recommended during high avalanche danger warnings.
